After 12 years of breeding and growing Orchids my greenhouse froze in an ice storm and all my hard work was gone. I needed a new hobby that could occupy my time and in some way would continue to fuel my fascination with breeding and genetics. I bought my first pigeons in 2004. I have two things responsible for my introduction to pigeon racing. The 1st was Google and the 2nd was a 12 pack of Corona Lite. I was familiar with homing pigeons from a friend who used them in Falconry. I had no idea you could race them and win money with them! While surfing the net i stumbled on the Vegas Classic Race and Auction. 2 hours and 12 beers later i owned 5 pigeons from the Vegas Auction. I started building the loft the next afternoon. HIS BREEDING PHILOSOPHY My breeding loft houses 16 pair of breeders. They have plenty of room in the 16 X 25 loft with two 8 X 16 aviarys attached. They receive an "all natural" health program 365 days of the year. The top 8 pair breed 4 rounds with 1 round being pumped. The bottom 8 pair breed 3 rounds and pump 1 round for the top 8 pair. There are no late breds or bred for stock birds. Everything is raced. Mike Ganus told me two years ago that i did not need him anymore. Take the breeders i have now and keep their prize winning youngsters to continue my loft. This turned out to be great advise as i now have five 1st place winners in the breeding loft. 3 of which bred 1st place birds this year. I am convinced that good birds given plenty of room, in absolute peak health year round will produce, with the baskets help, a successful loft for many years. I guess time will tell. A note of thanks There are two people that need thanking for the success of my breeding loft. Mike Ganus and Kenny Rhodes. When i contacted them in 2004 i told them i wanted the best birds i could get. I had to leave it to them because at that point i had never held a pigeon. True to their word they provided me with fantastic birds that gave me immediate success in my 1st year of One Loft racing. Their birds churned out great racers and now their youngsters are doing the same. Thanks Mike and Kenny! I have a lot to learn about pigeon racing and Skip Walston, Paul Walsh and Warren Sessink continue to help me improve. And finally a sincere thank you to Bill Hatcher and Larry Lewis who have devoted so much time, energy and money to creating a race that is 2nd to none. And now with the addition of a 2nd race, the ABC race next year is sure to be another successful test for our breeding. |
